COBALT represents LTV journalist Ilze Nagla at the ECHR

2013 - 07 - 16

COBALT successfully represented LTV journalist Ilze Nagla at the European Court of Human Rights against the state of Latvia in relation to a search made at the journalist’s home and confiscation of belongings. The ECHR held that Latvia had violated Article 10 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms on freedom of speech. The court ruled that any search during which data storage devices are seized from a journalist gives rise to questions about the journalist’s freedom of speech, including protection of their sources of information. The ECHR concluded that in this particular case corresponding and sufficient causes for the search had not been given.
