COBALT helped to carry out the Eurostat feasibility study on the use of data obtained by mobile positioning for tourism statistics.

The purpose of the study was to continue developing the methodology for studying the spatial mobility of people on the basis of mobile phone positioning data. The consortium of the study consisted of six partners and two subcontractors: Positium LBS OÜ, University of Tartu, Statistics Estonia, Statistics Finland, Institute for Tourism and Recreational Research in Northern Europe in Germany, IFSTTAR, Innopolis Consulting and COBALT.

Four European Union Member States were represented in the study.

Borenius was the legal adviser to the project. Our work covered analysing the legal issues associated with the collection and processing of the data obtained by mobile positioning on the basis of European and Estonian law and coordination of similar work in the other three European Union Member States.

Senior associate Ave Piik managed the project for COBALT.
