Changes in IP&IT Practice Group at COBALT Riga office


As of 1 July 2020 COBALT Riga office expands its offering to the market by introducing changes in the structure of IP&IT Practice Group. The aim is to address ever growing demand for legal services in the fields of intellectual property, data protection, information technology, pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

Patents, Trademarks and Designs subgroup has been established with Senior Associate Līga Fjodorova to act as the head of the subgroup. Liga is a licenced Latvian and European Trade Mark Attorney. For more than 10 years Liga has been one of the leading intellectual property law experts in Latvia. Liga’s reputation is recognized also internationally: she is named trademark star in the 2020 IP STARS rankings and recognized as one of very few Band 1 IP practitioners in Latvia by the Chambers Europe. Liga has wide experience representing clients in IP disputes, including representation of international pharmaceutical companies in patent litigations. She regularly represents clients in copyright matters, including Latvian collective rights management organisations AKKA/LAA (Copyright and Communication Consulting Agency/ Latvian Authors Association) and LaIPA (Latvian Performers’ and Producers’ Association). Liga teaches intellectual property law at the Riga Technical University.

The newly established subgroup of Data Protection, IT and Media at COBALT Riga office will be headed by Senior Associate Linda Bīriņa. Linda is one of the leading Latvian experts in the field of media law and privacy protection with her Ph.D. thesis on the subject well under way at the University of Latvia. For a number of years Linda is a Member of the Ethics Committee of the Latvian Advertising Association. Linda has represented clients in numerous proceedings concerning false information, defamation and claims for compensation, including Latvian Television and Latvian Radio (public broadcasters), publisher AS Cits medijs, the Baltic Center for Investigative Journalism Re:Baltica and news website TVNET. She has participated in several international studies on data protection and media rights, and teaches intellectual property law at the Riga Technical University and international media law at the University of Latvia. Legal 500 has listed Linda as a Rising Star in the area of IP, IT and Telecoms.

Both subgroups will operate within the framework of COBALT IP&IT Practice group which is headed by Partner Indriķis Liepa. Indrikis will continue to lead also the Pharmaceuticals, Healthcare and Life Sciences subgroup.

Partner Ingrida Karina-Berzina, a former head of IP&IT Practice group at COBALT Riga office has decided to focus on a full-time Ph.D. studies of law at a top-ranked European university while continuing teaching at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga and the Riga Graduate School of Law. COBALT extends sincere thanks for Ingrida’s significant contribution to the development of the firm and wishes her every success in academical research and educating new generations of IP&IT lawyers.
